Edinburg, Texas - Texas-Pan American sent its seniors
out in style with a 111-62 win over Central Baptist in the last home game of the
2003-04 season. It was the eighth win in a row for the Broncs and was the first
time since December 7, 1990 that they scored more than 110 points.
The UTPA seniors were honored with plaques
holding replicas of their uniforms. The plaques were presented by Texas-Pan
American Athletic Director Bill Weidner and UTPA head coach Bob
Hoffman and his wife Kelli. The seniors honored were Delvis Diaz
(San Antonio, Texas/South Plains College), Allen Holcomb (Chicago,
Illinois/Allen County CC) and Andrius Sakalys (Vilnius, Lithuania/Eastern
Oklahoma State).
For the first seven minutes, Central
Baptist hung in there, trailing 14-11. Then Sergio Sanchez (Jr./San
Antonio, Texas/Temple College) took over. Sanchez scored nine points in a
11-2 run in just two minutes that broke the game open.
The Mustangs shot just 32.8% from the
floor, the second straight game that the Broncs held their opponents to under
33%. UTPA also forced 21 turnovers and out rebounded CBC by 13.
For Texas-Pan American (13-13), Ray Castillo (Jr./San Antonio, Texas/Temple College) had 23 points on 8-of-11
shooting from the floor and 6-of-7 from behind the arc to pace the Broncs.
Sanchez had 17 points and 13 assists in just 22 minutes of action. Ryan Lange (Jr./Inwood, Iowa/Northeast CC) had 13 points, eight rebounds and
blocked four shots while Chris Fagan Jr./Bronx, N.Y./Trinidad State) had
10 points.
 For Central Baptist (11-18), Orien
Hatcher had 16 points, Lamar Eslinger had 14 points and eight
rebounds and Jonathon Couvertier had 10 points.
"I thought we shot the ball extremely well
tonight." Said head coach Bob Hoffman. "When you have 30 assists, you're
getting good shots and being unselfish. We're really excited about the win
tonight but we have two very tough games on the road. Arkansas State and Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi are two really good teams. We'll get a little rest and we'll
be ready to go."
Texas-Pan American heads over to Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi, February 28. The Broncs beat the Islanders, 90-72 on
February 14. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
