Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team (1-15) suffered a 72-53 setback to the Virginia Cavaliers this Tuesday (Jan. 5) afternoon at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Broncs remained close to the Cavaliers in the first half up until the 5:08 mark when Luis Valera made 1-of-2 free throws after being fouled by Mike Scott. The Cavaliers then held back the Broncs as Virginia concluded the first half on a 17-2 run.
In the first half, UTPA outscored the Cavaliers in points off of turnovers with 10 to Virginia's nine.
Sophomore Jared Maree was the Broncs high scorer with 14 points. Maree scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half alone. The Houston, Texas native also grabbed four rebounds and collected one assist.
The Broncs also outscored the Cavaliers in second chance points, during the second half, with eight to Virginia's two and in points from the bench with UTPA scoring seven and the Cavaliers five.
Manny Hendrix contributed to the points from the bench during the second half as he scored all his five during the half. He also recorded one rebound.
Nick Weiermiller was the only other Bronc to finish in double-figures with 10 points. Weiermiller also posted two steals, one assist and rebound.
Mike Scott was the Cavaliers top scorer with 22 points and was three rebounds shy of a double-double as he grabbed seven boards. Sylven Landesberg finished the evening with 20 points while Sammy Zeglinksi added 13.
Next up for the Broncs is a match up with Northwestern this Thursday, January 7th with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m. CT.
