HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team beat the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks 3-0 on Saturday during their second match at the Marriott Houston Westchase Classic, hosted by Houston Baptist University, at Sharp Gym.
 
The Broncs took the first set 25-21, the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-23.
 
Sophomore Haley Durham led the Broncs (1-1) with eight kills and three blocks, while redshirt junior Maria Kliefoth had eight kills and a match-high .533 hitting percentage. Freshman Alisha Watson served up a match-high five aces to go with seven kills, eight digs and two blocks. Junior Diara Reynolds also had seven kills with eight digs. Junior Nausheen Merchant had a match-high 17 digs while Nycole Masaki posted a match-high 33 assists.
 
Kelley Wollak led the Mavericks (1-1) with 10 kills and 15 digs. Michaela Schimmer recorded 15 assists while Megan Schmale posted a match-high four blocks.
 
Kliefoth and Watson combined for eight kills and just one error in the first set to give the Broncs the early 1-0 lead. Kliefoth's four kills came on five attacks for an .800 hitting percentage. Watson recorded a kill to bring the Broncs to set point and an ace to clinch the first set victory.
 
The Mavericks jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but a kill and an ace by Watson kicked-off a short back and forth stretch before the Broncs tied it up at 11-11 on kills by Reynolds and Durham. The Broncs took their first lead at 13-12 on a Watson ace, and the set was tied or within one until the Broncs went up 20-18 on another Watson ace.
 
The Mavericks took a quick lead in the third set as well, going up 4-0, but the Broncs came right back to it up at 5-5. The Broncs took a 14-13 lead on a kill by Reynolds, but the Mavericks scored the next three points to take a 16-14 lead. The Broncs took the lead back at 19-18 on a Merchant ace, but the Mavericks scored four of the next six points to get within two points of taking the set. Kliefoth had two kills, including the match winner, to lead the Broncs on a 5-0 run to end the set.
 
The Broncs conclude tournament action tonight at 7:30 p.m. against host Houston Baptist.
