Volleyball Falls to Southern Mississippi

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana –The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team had their four-match win streak snapped as they fell to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 0-3 at the Big Daddy's Invitational on Saturday.
 
The Broncs (9-4) led early in the first set as a kill from Haley Durham gave them the 5-3 lead. A kill by Anjane Janda pushed the Broncs lead to 6-4 but the Golden Eagles (9-2) tied the set at six with a service ace from Shelby Russell. Later in the set, Southern Mississippi took the 19-14 after a kill by Quinci Hayward before taking the set 25-16.
 
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick start in the second set as they took the early 4-0 lead. A kill by Diara Reynolds cut the Golden Eagles' to 14-8. Southern Mississippi closed out the second set on an 11-6 run to take the set 25-14.
 
In the third set, the Golden Eagles took the early 3-0 lead but the Broncs got on the board with a kill from Maria Kliefoth. After the Broncs cut the lead to one on a Southern Mississippi attack error, the Golden Eagles went on a 10-2 run to push their lead to 15-6. A kill by Anjane Janda made it 24-18 in favor of Southern Mississippi but they would take the set 25-19.
 
Maria Kliefoth and Anjane Janda paced the Broncs with nine kills while Nycole Masaki recorded 25 assists. Shanice Faison and Nausheen Merchant both recorded six digs to lead the defense.
 
Quinci Hayward led the Golden Eagles with 13 kills and four blocks. Kristen Flemming paced the offense with 25 assists while Mary Pursell added eight digs.
 
The Broncs are back in action on September 20 when they face off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with the match scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
