EDINBURG – In the first Western Athletic Conference home game in program history, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team dropped a double overtime thriller to the University of Idaho Vandals, 86-85, on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The game started with a technical foul before the clock started, leading Idaho's Glen Dean to make one of two free throws. The first half ended with UTPA senior Jamal Dantzler nailing a buzzer-beating three-pointer, his first of the season, to bring the Broncs (4-13, 0-2 WAC), who had been down by as many as 11, within two at 36-34.
 
Dantzler scored seven points in the final 3:10 of the first half, including back-to-back layups that tied the game at 31-31.
 
Sophomore Shaquille Hines converted a three-point play on the first possession of the second half to give the Broncs their first lead, but the Vandals (7-10, 1-2 WAC) responded with a 14-4 run, capped by a Davis layup, to go up 50-41. A Hines layup with 12:41 remaining kicked off a 10-2 run as the Broncs pulled within 54-53.
 
The Broncs pulled within one without tying the game or taking the lead multiple times, getting to within 59-58 on a pair of free throws by graduate student Javorn Farrell with 4:01 left, and then 61-60 on two more free throws by Farrell. The Broncs were within 63-62 after a layup by junior Shaquille Boga, and then, after a pair of free throws by Sekou Wiggs, Boga hit a three to tie the game and Dantzler got back on the board with a layup to put the Broncs up 67-65 with 1:01 remaining.
 
Dean tied the game by hitting a free throw seconds later and then another free throw with 3.4 seconds left.
 
In the first overtime, after two free throws by Wiggs, Farrell hit a free throw and Hines made a layup to give the Broncs the lead. The Broncs led 72-71 after a pair of free throws by junior Lauri Toivonen with 1:29 to go, but Wiggs made two more free throws to put the Vandals back ahead. Hines tied the game with a free throw with nine seconds left.
 
In the second overtime, with the game tied at 75-75, the Broncs scored six-straight points on two Farrell free throws and a pair of Boga baskets to take their largest lead at 81-75 with 2:09 remaining.
 
The Broncs still led by five at 84-79 with 59 seconds left. Wiggs made four free throws to make it a one point game, but Boga made a free throw of his own to extend the Broncs' lead to 85-83 with 29 seconds left.
 
The Vandals called timeout with 12 seconds left, and Hill missed a three off the ensuing inbounds pass. On the rebound, Farrell was called for a foul, and Paulin Mpawe hit one free throw to make it a one-point game. He missed the second shot, and the rebounders got tied up, forcing a jump ball situation, with the possession arrow in favor of Idaho.
 
On the final play, Perrion Callandret attempted his first basket of the game and hit a bank shot with half a second remaining to give the Vandals the victory.
 
Farrell led the Broncs with his second double-double, consisting of 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds (five offensive). The 17 rebounds are tied for the most by a WAC player this season He also had a season-high seven assists to go with two steals. Farrell hit a career-high 12 free throws in a career-high 14 attempts. Hines scored 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Boga also scored 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Dantzler finished with a season-high tying 10 points.
 
Hill led the Vandals with 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 7-of-15 from behind the arc. Stephen Madison scored 19 points with 14 rebounds and four assists. Dean finished with 13 points and four assists. Wiggs scored 12 points while going 10-for-13 from the line.
 
The Broncs welcome Seattle U to the UTPA Fieldhouse play on Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6.
