Box ScorePHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's soccer team clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament despite a 4-1 loss to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Sunday at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Broncs (8-7-4, 2-6-1 WAC) clinched the spot with Seattle U's 11-0 win over Chicago State. The Broncs can finish no worse than tied with the Cougars, but would win the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series (1-0-1).
Freshman
Hadlie Tucker scored the Broncs' lone goal, the first of her career, on the first penalty kick goal in program history at 71:50.
That was it against Antelopes (6-9-1, 5-3-0 WAC) goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch (5-7-1), who made seven saves.
The Antelopes peppered freshman Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (3-2-0) with 34 shots, 17 of which went on goal. Gonzalez responded with a career-high 13 saves.
The Broncs finished with 11 shots, eight of which went on goal.
The match was scoreless until the final nine seconds of the first half, when
Maria Monterroso scored off an assist by
Taylor Layton to make it 1-0 Antelopes.
Brylee Hawkins scored on a long free kick three and a half minutes into the second half to put the Antelopes up 2-0.
Monterroso found the upper left hand corner of the goal at 67:41 to make it 3-0.
Ten minutes after Tucker scored her goal, Layton got a cross from
Shannon Costello and shot the ball over Gonzalez to complete the scoring.
The Broncs close out the regular season on Friday at 4 p.m. at New Mexico State.
