EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team opens up their home portion of their schedule when they face the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers on Wednesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend. Gates open at 9 a.m.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros faced the McNeese State Cowgirls in a neutral site match at Baylor's Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center where they fell 1-6.
Freshman
Dominique Ibarra recorded the lone point for the Vaqueros after defeating Hannah Brett 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.
Freshman
Tara Donaho took her match against Vivien Borbley to three sets as she opened with a 7-5 win in the first set before falling 3-6 in the second to force the tiebreaker. She fell in the tiebreaker 3-10.
Scouting the RetrieversThe Retrievers will kick off their 2016 dual match season when they make their way to the Orville Cox Tennis Center to face the Vaqueros. They kick off their season with a Texas road trip as they also head to Corpus Christi to face the Islanders and to Rice to face the Owls before facing Virginia Tech in a neutral site match.
The Retrievers are coming off of a 5-14 season as they return eight from last year's squad. Senior Shannon Cleary leads the group of returners after posting a 7-7 record last season, while mainly playing in the No. 1 spot.
UMBC also returns Laura Ambrozic, Mariami Dolashvili, Aishu Lyer, Madlena Kurasz, Alice Taylor, Charlotte Tonjann and Hanna Victorsson.
Former Broncs Rob Hubbard and Oliver Steil lead the Retrievers as Hubbard enters his seventh season with UMBC. He played for the Broncs from 1974-78 and was part of the 1978 Broncs' team that finished ranked in the top-10. He was also invited to the NCAA Division I National Singles and Doubles Championships as a junior and senior. Hubbard also coached the Broncs from 2005-08.
Steil enters his sixth season with the Retrievers as he played with the Broncs from 2003-06. He recorded a 19-13 record during his freshman season and was named the team MVP in his senior campaign. He also served as a graduate assistant coach from 2006-09.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 0-2 all-time against UMBC in a series that dates back to 2012. Both of these teams faced off last season as the Retrievers came away with the 4-3 victory on January 21, 2015 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

Reegan Greenwood currently ranks eighth in program history with 43 career singles wins. She is one win away from tying Wanda Beguelin (2011-14) for seventh all-time and just seven wins away from Tania Webster (1988-91) for fifth place. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
