RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team beat the Boise State University Broncos 72-60 on Monday at the South Padre Island Convention Center as part of the third annual UTRGV South Padre Island Classic.
Junior
Jena' Williams led the Vaqueros (6-4) with a career-high 16 points and a season-high five assists. Junior
Mele Kailahi scored 13 points with five rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Sophomore
Deborah Ogayemi scored 11 points with five rebounds. Freshman
Charlotte O'Keefe scored seven points with seven rebounds, two steals and one block.
Natalie Pasco led the Broncos (4-8) with 11 points.
Abby Muse scored 10 points with seven rebounds and four blocks.
The Vaqueros trailed 8-6 in the final minute of the first quarter when Kailahi hit a 3-pointer and Williams made a buzzer-beating jumper to make the score 11-8.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to four early in the second quarter on a 3-point play by sophomore
Iyana Dorsey, but the Broncos scored the next five points to take the lead.
The lead switched a few times over the next few minutes before the Vaqueros went on an 8-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by junior
Tiffany McGarity just before the buzzer, to take a 33-26 halftime lead.
The Broncos scored the first five points of the third quarter, but Ogayemi made a pair of free throws, O'Keefe sunk a turnaround 3 and then Williams knocked down a deep 3 to extend the Vaqueros' lead to 41-31.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 12 for the first time on a Williams turnaround jumper that made the score 56-44 in the final minute of the third.
The Vaqueros took a 14-point on a Kailahi layup that made the score 62-48 early in the fourth quarter, pushing the game out of reach.
UTRGV concludes the UTRGV South Padre Island Classic on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Bowling Green at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Texas A&M-Commerce faces Boise State at 3 p.m. Tickets, which include admission to both games, are on sale now at
